Certificate transparency for DV and OV certificates
Since January 2016, certificates validated by domain (domain validation - DV) and by organisation (organisation validation - OV) have been supporting certificate transparency. Entries about the certificates had so far been issued for EV certificates only, but now the protection was expanded to all certificates issued by Symantec.
Begin of support
OV certificates have been supporting certificate transparency since 19th January 2016. DV certificates followed on 29th January 2016.
The new safety feature doesn’t require any activation by the customer – the certificates are automatically published in the logs. Neither the issuing process nor the actual certificates are affected by this change.
What is certificate transparency?
Certificate transparency describes a procedure that protects the owner as well as the visitor of a domain that is secured by a certificate. Every SSL certificate issued by Symantec is published in logs that are independently administered and displayed in multiple locations.
This way, the browser can verify that the certificate was published in this list and was not manipulated.
The advantage of certificate transparency is the protection from man in the middle attacks that are carried out with a forged certificate. The domain owners can see for themselves in the certificate transparency log, if a certificate was already issued for their domain.
New intermediate certificates
GeoTrust is soon going to use new intermediate certificates for their products RapidSSL, RapidSSL Wildcard, QuickSSL and QuickSSL Premium. Nothing will change for the customers of SSLmarket. Along with the purchased certificates, you will always receive the corresponding and correct intermediate certificate. SSLmarket will take care of everything, so you don’t need to search for any “CA bundle”.
